The Finnish Doctoral Network for Music Research has included several study groups that each have focused on specific questions or areas of interest. The groups are presently on hold and will start working again with funding improvements. They convene in seminars on a regular basis to discuss assigned research articles or the attendees' research reports. Some of the groups also convene online.

Article workshop

This group, which is a part of the syllabus at Sibelius Academy, welcomes all university students and postdoctoral researchers who are planning to write a research article for an academic publication. The methodological focus is on music history research. Attendees study research articles and practise constructive criticism of the peers' texts. They also write a research article to be published in, for example, "Musiikki." The group is led by Professor Anne Kauppala.

Gender group

Led by Professor John Richardson and Anna-Elena Pääkkölä, PhLic, the gender group started with a seminar at Turku University on 18 October 2013.

Methodology group

In the spring of 2013, the group discussed discourse analysis in music research. In the future, the group plans to delve into new areas of methodology. The group is led by Professor Tarja Rautiainen-Keskustalo.

Music and time geography

This group started at the University of Eastern Finland (and online) in the autumn of 2013. The focus was on the questions of time geography and rhythm analysis. Tim Edensor, the author of "Geographies of Rhythm" and a reader in Cultural Geography at the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Manchester Metropolitan University, was invited to visit the group during the academic year. The group was led by Professor Helmi Järviluoma and PhD Salli Anttonen.

Popular music group

This group's focus was on the connections and interfaces between music and society, specifically consumption, media, economy, and politics. The majority of the articles that were analysed in this group discussed popular music genres. Nevertheless, the group is prepared to tackle research on any aspect of music. The group has been led by prof. Heikki Uimonen (SibA) and D.Soc.Sc. Kaarina Kilpiö (SibA).

Technology group

This group started in the autumn of 2013. The focus was on timbre, questions regarding music technology research, and audiovisual themes. The group has been led by Docent, Adjunct Professor Susanna Välimäki and Professor John Richardson. Details availabe in the muto calendar.

Benjamin group

The Walter Benjamin group has discussed Benjamin's concept of aura.
This group convenes in Helsinki. If you wish to join the group, please contact Juho Kaitajärvi-Tiekso (juho.kaitajarvi[at]gmail.com).
